Clayton is a town rich in history and culture. Joel Clayton and his brothers founded the town in 1857. The town played a significant role during the coal mining boom and has a history of winemaking. As a result, you can find many cultural attractions in Clayton.

Clayton Historical Society & Museum

Any historical tour of Clayton should start at the Clayton Historical Society & Museum. It is an excellent resource for historical information on the city. Not only that, the museum is in the Joel Clayton House. The Clayton Historical Museum is full of exhibits and photos of places, events, and people. They even have the old jail on location for visitors to check out. Visitors can also enjoy various events from the Historical Society throughout the year.

Endeavor Hall

Endeavor Hall has been a location of significance from the earliest days of Clayton. The community built the structure as a Methodist Church in the 1860s. 

The Christian Endeavor Society bought the building in 1894, and gradually became a center for community activities over the years. One notable event at Endeavor Hall was the vote to incorporate Clayton in 1964. It eventually became property of the city in 1989. The hall is still available to rent for events to this day.

Clayton Civic Center

The Clayton Civic Center is a site with a lot of history. Joel Clayton started a small vineyard and winery on the land. After his death, his heirs sold it to Paul De Martini. At one point, it was one of the most productive wineries in the nation. While it did change hands a few times, the city purchased the property in 1988. 

In a later renovation project, the city converted the property into offices, the police department, and other facilities.

The Clayton Club Saloon

6096 Main Street

Opened in 1873, the Clayton Club Saloon is the oldest business still in operation in Clayton. Jacob Rhine opened the club as the National Saloon. It later became the Clayton Club and has had several owners over the years. As old as it is, this saloon survived Prohibition and the Great Depression. It is still a popular spot to have drinks almost 150 years after it opened its doors.
